If You’re From New Jersey, These 10 Classic Dishes Hit Home
Our twists on these foods can't be beat.

Whether you grew up or recently moved here, you know New Jersey is home to some pretty spectacular food. Between original creations and our unique spin on American and Italian classics, foodies will never be bored exploring the culinary scene here in the Garden State.
From our hot dogs to our tomato pies and fresh blueberries made into decadent desserts, it's clear Jerseyans know how to cook (and eat). Here are 10 classic foods you likely grew up eating if you're from the Garden State, plus the iconic restaurants that serve them to this day. Did any of your favorites make this list?
1. Pizza
New Jersey pizza is better than pizza anywhere else in the country... except maybe New York. We're pretty even on the pizza front when compared to NYC, though many food critics have claimed that the best plain pie can be found on our side of the Hudson River. You can find a good pie just about anywhere in New Jersey, but notable favorites include Pizza Town USA in Elmwood Park and Zeppoli in Collingswood.
2. Tomato Pie
A South Jersey staple, tomato pie is heavy on the sauce and light on the cheese. You can find the best at Papa's Tomato Pies in Robbinsville, although some would say the best tomato pie can be found at De Lorenzo's in the same town. Jersey natives often have their own personal favorites—which one do you prefer?
3. Panzarotti

Similar to a calzone, a panzarotti consists of delectable dough, stuffed with mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce. But unlike a calzone or pizza, a true panzarotti is crispy and fried to perfection—never baked. You can add a variety of toppings to panzarotti, but I think they're perfectly delicious plain. Find some of the best panzarotti and other Italian fare at Tarantini Panzarotti in Cherry Hill.
4. Pork Roll (or Taylor Ham)

Whether you call it a pork roll or a Taylor ham, most Jerseyans can agree that this breakfast sandwich is absolutely delicious. It's a hard roll filled with egg, cheese, and thick slices of savory ham, and may just be New Jersey's most iconic food. Head to Slater's Deli in Leonardo (Middletown), Olde Towne Deli in Boonton, or Pat's Diner in Trenton for some of the state's best pork rolls.
5. Cheesesteak
In our humble opinion, New Jersey does cheesesteak better than Philly. (Sorry!) Our version of the sandwich has slightly different seasonings, caramelized onions, a poppy-seed kaiser roll, and, of course, gooey cheese for the perfect bite. If you're on the hunt for the best New Jersey cheesesteaks, look no further than Donkey's Place in Camden or Donkey's Place Too in Medford. You'll be in sandwich heaven.
6. Sloppy Joe
This isn't the sloppy joe that most people know, and not all New Jerseyans are familiar with it. But if you live near South Orange, this version of the iconic sandwich may just be a staple. Created back in 1934 at Town Hall Deli, this sloppy joe features three slices of specially baked Pullman rye bread stacked with layers of meat, cheese, and coleslaw and topped with Russian dressing. Other versions simply can't compare.
7. Blueberries

Hammonton, New Jersey, is often referred to as the "Blueberry Capital of the World." Nearly 80 percent of the state's blueberries are produced in or near this charming town, and they don't just grow here: the highbush variety was first cultivated in Hammonton, too! Naturally, this translates to some amazing blueberry-flavored foods and desserts. For some incredible blueberry pie, stop by Penza's Pies at the Red Barn in Hammonton.
8. Jersey Corn

New Jerseyans know how to do corn right. We like ours slathered in butter and sprinkled with salt, preferably straight from a farm stand or market. It's even better cooked on the grill in the summertime. Pick your own sweet husks for the backyard barbecue at places like Alstede Farms in Chester, Abma's Farm Market and Greenhouses in Wyckoff, or Johnson's Corner Farm in Medford.
9. Disco Fries

Disco fries, a New Jersey classic, are a cross between Canadian poutine and regular cheese fries. Some say these scrumptious plates of crinkle-cut fries topped with melted mozzarella and gravy started at Tick Tock Diner in Clifton back in the 1970s, but no one can really say for sure. What we do know, however, is that they make the perfect late-night snack. You can find them on the menu at several diners throughout the state.
10. Hot Dogs
Most states have their own version of the classic hot dog, but New Jersey's versions stand out. We have the Italian hot dog—served on pizza bread and topped with onions, bell peppers, and crisp potatoes—which you can find at Jimmy Buff's in West Orange or Kenilworth. There's also the Ripper, a deep-fried hot dog served at Rutt's Hut in Clifton. Talk about delicious!
Which of these iconic Jersey foods are your favorite? Are there any others that we missed (think: bagels, salt water taffy, or fries)? If you're on the hunt for even more authentic New Jersey meals, consider taking a food-inspired trip throughout the state.
