Experience Over 200 Years of History When You Visit the Old-School Glur’s Tavern in Nebraska

Step inside Glur’s Tavern, a historic tavern in Nebraska where classic burgers, cold beers, and over 200 years of stories await.

There’s something to be said for visiting shiny, brand-new places, but do you ever get the urge to spend time somewhere older—where the past still feels close? If you’re hoping to visit a historic tavern in Nebraska, one place stands out from the rest.

Glur’s Tavern in Columbus opened in 1876 and is widely considered the oldest continuously operating tavern west of the Mississippi River. The state had achieved statehood less than a decade earlier, and that deep-rooted history is a big part of what makes a visit here feel special. Despite its age, it remains a bustling local favorite today.

The establishment was originally known as Bucher’s Saloon, named after its founders, Swedish immigrant brothers William and Joseph Bucher. In 1914, the business was purchased by Louis Glur and renamed Glur’s Tavern, the name it still carries over a century later.

Throughout its long history, the tavern has served as a landmark gathering place for both locals and travelers. According to local tradition, William “Buffalo Bill” Cody was a frequent visitor, most famously stopping by in May 1883 with his Wild West troupe. Following the funeral of his dear friend, Major Frank North, Cody reportedly bought a round for the entire house and paid with a legendary $1,000 bill. Stories like these, combined with the tavern's ability to weather decades of change, helped earn the building a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.

While the history draws people in, the food keeps them coming back. Glur’s is famous for its classic burgers, solid beer selection, and relaxed, no-frills setting. The menu focuses on familiar favorites rather than modern trends, which suits the tavern’s character perfectly.

There’s nothing flashy about Glur’s, and that’s a major part of its appeal. The space feels warm and lived-in, with much of its original character preserved. Sitting inside, it’s easy to imagine the generations of patrons who passed through back when this part of the country was still taking shape.
