College Street Cafe Is a Missouri Retro Gem That’ll Whisk You Back to the Sock Hop Days

If you want some pie that promises to be as good as grandma's, head to this retro Route 66 cafe in Springfield, MO.

As you step inside College Street Cafe, you can imagine what it might have been like in the 1950s, with school girls in poodle skirts sitting on the swiveling barstools along the chrome-lined countertop. The checkerboard floors and Route 66 memorabilia take you back to the heydays of the Mother Road. Whether you come for the retro vibes, mile-high meringue pie, or affordable prices, you’re in for a nostalgic treat.

Springfield, Missouri, is nicknamed the “Birthplace of Route 66.” It was here in 1926 that the famed cross-country route was officially named. Today, several landmarks honor this heritage, including the Route 66 Car Museum, located just behind the restaurant, and a nearby roadside park featuring a replica of the quizzical "Red's Giant Hamburg" sign that attracted travelers to Missouri's first drive-thru restaurant.

The stretch of College Street that runs in front of the restaurant is painted with the iconic Route 66 road sign logo, making this corner of Springfield a perfect stop along an ultimate Mother Road road trip. Originally known as Pigg’s Cafe, College Street Cafe has had many more names and iterations since it first opened in the 1950s.

The retro vibe starts before you even step into the building. The checkerboard theme of the interior floors extends to the exterior of this shoebox-size restaurant, which is covered in a bold, cherry-red and white checkerboard. Colorful flower planters add even more cheer. A sign out front lists the highlights: Burgers, fries, homemade pies, and ice cream. What more could you need?

Inside, you’ll find a cozy space with a mere handful of booths and tables, along with the classic barstool diner seating. On a recent visit, I noticed a homemade pineapple upside-down cake resting on the counter, along with a sign announcing that today’s pie was coconut cream. When I asked the server about this, she said it was so fresh it might still be warm.

While I openly love many sweet treats, coconut cream pie is a special favorite, and finding a place where it’s homemade is even more special. In fact, this is what drew me to College Street Cafe in the first place, as I had seen many commenters on a local Facebook group saying this was the best pie in town. And, it certainly lived up to its reputation.

While I don’t always love meringue, as it covers many pies with a tasteless sponge, the College Street Cafe meringue was fluffy and sweet, adding contrast to the richer flavors of the creamy base. Some coconut cream pies are overpowered with fake coconut flavoring, adding an essence of suntan lotion, but not this slice. The cream and coconut were perfectly sweetened, and the crust was light and buttery.

I can’t promise College Street Cafe will have coconut cream pie on your visit, as the daily options vary, but I can promise the menu and prices are as nostalgic as the decor. I recently ordered breakfast and had eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, along with biscuits and gravy for $6.99. You read that correctly! It was cheaper than a fast-food restaurant, but you must arrive before 9 a.m. to take advantage of this early-bird pricing.

The lunch and dinner menu features sandwiches with automotive-themed monikers, adding the perfect Route 66 touch to your meal. The lineup of classic dinner plates could be from the 1950s, with traditional favorites including meatloaf, open-faced roast beef, and chopped sirloin. The meals are as nostalgic as the treats!

While I haven’t had a chance to try them, I’ve heard the hand-breaded chicken tenders and onion rings are not to be missed. Like the coconut cream pie, this isn’t food from a box or bag. Instead, it’s made in-house. You might swear you’re sitting at your grandma’s dinner table instead of a restaurant.

While you won’t find your grandma handing you your plate, you will find an amazing crew of people who seem to be here because they love it. I heard one of the waitresses saying she simply couldn’t imagine retiring. The regulars are known here. Just like Cheers, it’s a place “where everybody knows your name,” if you frequently visit.

My family took a Route 66 road trip in 2017, and stopping at places like College Street Cafe was a highlight. You truly feel transported in time by everything from the retro decor to the “good-as-grandma’s” homestyle cooking. Whether you’re journeying across the Mother Road or simply looking for a hidden gem in Springfield, College Street Cafe is worth a visit. Make sure to leave room for pie!
