Barbecue is just as much a part of Mississippi cuisine as catfish and soul food, which means the state is full of amazing barbecue joints, so just what makes the Shed Barbecue and Blues Joint in Ocean Springs so special? Well, aside from the fact that it’s constructed from actual junk, the family-owned restaurant is known for serving brisket so good that people have actually parachuted into the restaurant just to get a taste.
The Shed started off as the brain child of former Ole Miss student, Brad Orrison.
When not in class, Brad spent his spare time rummaging through dumpsters and piles of garbage left on the side of the road.
After college, Brad and his trailer full of junk returned to Ocean Springs.
According to The Shed’s website, Brad’s extensive collection included "warped used two by fours, old tin roofing, bent nails, ugly windows, mountains of pure, unadulterated junk."
Unable to part with any of his findings, Brad and his younger sister, Brooke, decided to build a take-out barbecue joint out of them.
The restaurant was immediately a hit. In fact, locals loved The Shed so much, they began helping the Orrison’s junk up the place.
There’s even a special drop-off for customers to donate old license plates.
Customers even helped build additions to The Shed, including the seating area.
Aside from its unique appearance, it’s The Shed’s mouthwatering barbecue that people can’t stop talking about.
The smoky goodness has attracted people from near and far, by parachute and car. That's right, parachute. According to Brad and Brooke, a customer actually came to the restaurant by parachute.
According to the owners, it’s the Secret Shed Rub and signature barbecue sauce that makes their meat so good.
The secret rub and sauce are available for purchase at The Shed as well as on the restaurant's website.
From brisket and ribs to chicken and sausage, The Shed has it all, including live music.
A "full-fledged joint," The Shed has live music every Saturday night.
