From log cabin eateries to train-themed restaurants, Minnesota is full of magical places to grab a bite to eat. But next time you're willing to go a bit off the beaten track, you might just stumble onto the most magical restaurant you've ever been to. Naniboujou Lodge & Restaurant in Grand Marais, Minnesota, is far from the lights and sounds of the city. But that's what makes it so incredible. Its beautiful colors and scenery make it look straight out of a storybook.
Naniboujou Lodge began as a private club in the 1920s. It hosted many famous people, like Babe Ruth and Ring Lardner.
But with the Great Depression came financial struggles that put the lodge's fate at stake. Ownership has passed through many hands in the past 90-plus years.
Yet somehow, it managed to hold its own despite its secluded location. Today, this stunningly beautiful lodge and restaurant is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The beautiful lodge stands among a thick patch of forest in Minnesota's North Woods. From its roofline to the building materials used, it looks like something out of a storybook.
Inside, Naniboujou Lodge operates about two dozen rooms, each as comfortable as the next.
And the restaurant is absolutely stunning. The enormous dining room is anchored by a 20-ton fireplace made out of stones native to Minnesota.
But the real showstopper? The bright paintings that cover the walls and ceiling of this incredible room. They are inspired by Cree designs and painted by French painter Antione Goufee.
If nothing else, you have to visit this place to see the vibrant domed ceiling.
But while you're there, you might as well grab a bite to eat, too.
All of the food served at Naniboujou Lodge is delicious. You'll find a menu full of great options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Really, there's no more unique stop on the North Shore than this storybook restaurant.
While the lodge is only opening until the third week in October, it hosts a Christmas celebration and other winter weekends that are well worth the drive up.
Click here to book your winter stay at the Naniboujou Lodge today. It's beautiful in summer, but a fresh blanket of snow only adds to its storybook feel.
The Naniboujou Lodge and Restaurant is located at 20 Naniboujou Trail in Grand Marais, Minnesota.
