When it comes to breakfast in Minnesota, there are many awesome places to choose from. So many, in fact, it can be difficult to pick just one. But if you're feeling super hungry and happen to be in the Twin Cities, you're going to want to check out The Nicollet Diner in Minneapolis. You will not leave hungry - I promise.
The Nicollet Diner, in downtown Minneapolis near Loring Park, has been a neighborhood institution since it opened.
In 2023, the diner moved two blocks north of its original location - to the corner formerly occupied by Ichiban - and combined with Roxy's Cabaret.
The new location offers the same all-American menu 24 hours a day, along with a full bar until 1 a.m., and a full schedule of entertainment.
The interior is bright and modern, dominated by booths with a blue and white motif.
The bar area is separate so that it can be closed off from the diner when it's not open.
The diner is known for its burgers and malts, which are far from "fun size" - these portions will not leave you hungry.
Take the Wakin' Bakin' Burger, for instance. It's stacked with two beef patties, cheese, bacon, a fried egg, and some veggies. It comes with a pile of fries.
The eatery doesn't skimp on its non-burger options, either.
The sandwiches are all stacked high and served with sizable side portions.
You'll also find diner classics and specials that may require you to sit a spell before you can muster the gumption to get up and leave.
Even so - you'll still need a milkshake.
But what I really want to talk about is breakfast.
All of the breakfast portions at The Nicollet Diner seem outsized. I am an omelet guy, and whenever I eat there, I always leave way more stuffed than I really need to be. On the other hand, I could try not to finish everything in one sitting - but the food is just so darn good, I can't help it!
The Nicollet Diner also serves what is likely the largest breakfast in Minnesota - its "Barbarian Breakfast."
It consists of half a dozen eggs, prepared to your liking, six strips of bacon, four sausage patties, hash browns, and toast - all served on top of a massive, buttermilk pancake.
If you take the "Barbarian Breakfast Challenge," and finish it all with in 60 minutes, you get a t-shirt, and your breakfast is free.
I'll stick with my omeley - but if you're up for the challenge, good luck (and let us know how you did)! For more information and to see a complete menu, visit The Nicollet Diner on the web. Check out the diner on Facebook for updates, specials, and information on showtimes at Roxy's Cabaret. If you're craving breakfast but don't want to get out of your jammies, you can order pickup or delivery from The Nicollet Diner on Grubhub.
