In Minnesota, old-school eateries are increasingly scarce, more and more frequently supplanted by franchises and chain restaurants. But you'll find one classic deli in St. Paul that’s been going strong for decades - since 1946, in fact - and definitely seems here to stay. At Cecils Deli and Bakery, you can still pop in for some of the best sandwiches to be found in the Land of 10,000 Lakes - the spicy reuben is my favorite, hands down - and then take a pound of pastrami and some potato salad home with you.
Cecils Deli and Bakery has been a stalwart of St. Paul’s Highland Park neighborhood for more than 75 years.
As a Twin Cities resident, Cecils is easily my favorite old-school deli near me.
In addition to its deli and bakery counters, it also has a restaurant area where you can sample its mouthwatering wares before you take some home with you.
It’s one of the few places in St. Paul where you can still find deli classics like matzoh ball soup.
Although the deli serves up burgers and chicken sandwiches, as well as snappy hot dogs, it’s really the deli sandwiches (and sides!) that are the stars of the show at Cecils.
I would argue that Cecils serves the best Reuben sandwiches in the state.
Wash down your meal with one of Cecil's massive milkshakes or and egg creme.
The milkshakes are even served up with the tin - just like the old days.
Once you’ve eaten, take some to explore the deli and market.
Do it after, because it’s never wise to shop on an empty stomach.
Cecils has a tremendous selection of deli meats that the friendly counter staff will slice to order.
I always try and keep some Cecils Deli and Bakery pastrami on hand in my fridge.
Check the sign to see what else is available in the deli while you’re there.
After you’ve perused the shelves and browsed the coolers, making sure you have everything you want, head to the bakery case.
Grab some fresh-baked bread, or choose something from the desserts and pastries - in case you need to satisfy a sweet tooth after you get home.
If these Cecils Deli and Bakery photos have your mouth watering, the only way to take care of that yen is popping in for a visit. Visit the Cecils website to take a look at the menu, see its hours, or to order takeout. After your visit to Cecils, head on over to nearby Crosby Farm Regional Park, where you can stretch your legs on the trails along the Mississippi River and even explore an unexpected slot canyon in Minnesota.
