This Beloved Michigan Coney Island Has Served Up Legendary Hot Dogs for Over 50 Years

Located in Rochester, Michigan, Lipuma’s Coney Island is a local gem serving classic comfort food, from coney dogs to chili cheese fries.

“Two Coney dogs and an order of chili cheese fries.” I’ve said those words countless times over the years, standing at the counter of one of my favorite restaurants: Lipuma’s Coney Island in Rochester, Michigan.

Those familiar with the Detroit metro area know that "Coney Islands” are a treasured specialty. They’re local restaurants or small chains—for example, Leo’s, National, and Kerby's—that resemble typical American diners. Despite a common misconception, they don’t have anything to do with the theme park in New York City.

Every Coney Island menu features the quintessential “Coney Dog,” which is a hot dog topped with a beanless chili, diced onions, and yellow mustard. Many also have “loose burgers” consisting of ground beef and toppings in a hot dog bun. Depending on the location, you might also find chili fries, hamburgers, breakfast platters, and Greek-American dishes.

Growing up in southeastern Michigan, I’ve been to my fair share of Coney Islands, but nothing beats the iconic Lipuma’s. Bill Lipuma opened the restaurant in 1969, and after about 30 years, he passed the family-owned eatery on to his son, Tony Lipuma.

The allure of Lipuma’s starts with the atmosphere. It’s located on the scenic Paint Creek River that flows through downtown Rochester. Patrons often eat on picnic tables alongside the river, where they can admire the ducks and the deciduous trees.

The restaurant itself is modest and quaint. When approaching Lipuma’s Coney Island, you’re met with a welcoming sign (which naturally pictures a coney dog), simple benches framing the doorway, and hanging flower baskets. There’s also an outdoor seating area on a wooden deck covered with a green awning.

The interior of Lipuma’s isn’t flashy, but I appreciate the simple and nostalgic atmosphere. The wooden booths, photo-covered walls, and old-school menu board underscore the vintage feel of the eatery. The centerpiece is the no-frills counter where customers order and receive their food.

Perhaps the best part of Lipuma’s is the delicious comfort cuisine. Here are some menu highlights:

  • Coney Island: The beloved chili dog topped with yellow mustard and diced onion
  • Chicago Dog: A hot dog on a poppy-seed bun topped with sport peppers, tomatoes, relish, pickle, onion, and celery salt
  • Coney Burger: Loose ground beef in a bun with chili, mustard, and onion
  • Taco: A fried tortilla shell with loose ground beef, cheese, lettuce, and tomato
  • A variety of French fries, including chili fries, chili cheese fries, cheese fries, and seasoned fries

Lipuma’s is located at 621 North Main Street in Rochester, Michigan. The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you’re planning to visit, remember to bring cash, as the establishment doesn’t accept credit cards.

Lipuma’s has become a cherished part of the Rochester community over the years. It’s the kind of place where families gather after baseball games, school events, or weekend strolls along the Paint Creek Trail. Whenever I'm in the area, I make sure to visit Lipuma’s Coney Island not just for the food, but for the nostalgic atmosphere that makes me feel right at home.
