Serving Up Soft Serve: This Ice Cream Stand in Michigan Won Me Over

In Melvindale, Michigan, a former mayor and her longtime friend now own the ice cream stand where they worked as teens. Together, they’re serving up soft serve and sweet memories.

There’s nothing quite like the relief of biting into something cool and creamy on a scorching, sticky summer afternoon. You know that moment when the heat is relentless, the humidity is clinging like a second skin, and suddenly—bam!—a soft serve cone in your hand feels like a tiny, sweet miracle. If you’re an ice cream aficionado looking to turn your summer into a delicious adventure, the Michigan Ice Cream Trail is a must. This legendary route leads you through dozens of charming spots across the state, each serving up its own frosty versions of heaven. But if you’re after the best bang for your soft serve buck, let me cut to the chase: Head straight to Banana Split Heaven in Melvindale, Michigan. Lucky for me, it’s just a short walk from my house to my favorite sweet treat of the summer.

Banana Split Heaven has a vibe that’s as warm as the summer sun but way cooler, thanks to their soft serve and creative menu. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill ice cream stand. It’s run by two longtime friends who grew up in Melvindale and actually worked here as teenagers. One of them even served as the town’s mayor and has been a city council member—talk about community roots deeper than a waffle cone. Though their ownership is only in its third year, the stand itself has been a neighborhood staple for decades. Returning to this spot was like coming home, and they’ve brought their passion for local flavors and a touch of creativity to every scoop and shake.

Now, about the menu, soft serve is the star, but they also offer shakes, malts, and a few Michigan specialties that locals love, like Boston Coolers (a root beer float cousin that you can’t miss). If you want to try what really knocks socks off, order the Crime Scene Shake, Frozen Hot Chocolate, or the infamous Ice Cream Nachos. The Crime Scene Shake is a wild combo of strawberry, pineapple, coconut, and white chocolate, with strawberry puree drizzled inside the cup. When you pour it out, the swirl looks like, well, brains, which is how it got its name. It’s playful, tasty, and perfect for Instagram if you’re into that sort of thing. I normally shy away from chunks in my shakes, but something about this one works. It doesn't hurt that it's incredibly delicious, either.

The Ice Cream Nachos deserve a shoutout, too. They start with a classic chocolate or vanilla soft serve (or a swirl!), served in the cheese cup of a nacho tray. Replacing the chips? Homemade waffle chips. Perfectly textured waffle chips. I can't stop raving about these waffle chips, y'all. From there, you get to customize with a variety of toppings. The owner recommends strawberry crunch and marshmallow, but when I went, we went for hot fudge, caramel, and pistachios—an unbeatable combo of creamy, crunchy, and sweet. It’s basically a party on a plate, and a clever twist on the traditional nacho experience that’s impossible to put down. And y'all, I love nachos.

Their banana splits are still the top seller (no surprise there) and their tropical flurry and Frozen Hot Chocolate are other crowd-pleasers that keep people coming back.

In my conversation with Stacy Bazman, one of the owners (and former mayor!), she shared what makes Banana Split Heaven such a gem in Melvindale. She described the town as a small, tight-knit community where everyone knows each other and looks out for one another. The ice cream stand serves as a gathering spot, much like a barbershop, where neighbors come not only for the treats but for the friendly visits. Stacy's real estate background and deep community ties help keep the spirit of Melvindale alive and well in their business.

Melvindale has seen changes over the years, especially after the economic crash in 2011, but the neighborhood’s heart remains strong. Banana Split Heaven stands as a bright, sweet beacon where locals can enjoy inventive ice cream creations and reconnect with their roots.

If you’re planning a visit to Michigan, make a stop in Melvindale and treat yourself at Banana Split Heaven. For a full meal, walk over to Jack’s Italian Bakery next door. Their fresh-baked Italian goodies (and u-bake pizzas!) pair perfectly with a summer ice cream outing. Melvindale might not be a strolling neighborhood, but it’s a place where good food and genuine community spirit come together in the sweetest way.

Whether you’re a lifelong Michigander or just passing through on your search for the best soft serve, Banana Split Heaven feels like a local secret worth savoring. Honestly? That’s the sweetest treat of all.
