This 24-Hour Diner in Massachusetts Is Perfect for Late-Night Cravings
Looking for a great place to grab a meal after a night out in Boston? The iconic South Street Diner has you covered 24-7.
Feeling hungry? Did you know that there are over 1,700 restaurants in the city of Boston, but only one that is open 24-7? Yes, I was completely surprised by this fact, as well. No matter if you visit before your early morning work shift or after a fun night out in the city, a great meal awaits you at the iconic South Street Diner, a 24-7 diner in Massachusetts, where you can go for any late-night cravings.
I never got a chance to visit the South Street Diner when I was a college student in Boston, but now that I know more about this fantastic eatery, I wish I had taken advantage of this one-of-a-kind restaurant. Back then, my friends and I settled for whatever kind of food we could get for late-night meals. Had I known more about the delicious diner right across from South Station, it would have been my go-to place.
The menu at South Street is extensive, featuring everything from traditional diner fare like pancakes, burgers, and quesadillas to signature “diner favorites” such as Boston Creme Pancakes and Maple-Pepper Fried Chicken Benedict. The restaurant also serves 50s-style drinks, vegan meals, and alcoholic drinks (until 1 a.m.). And did I mention that the food here isn’t your average diner cuisine? The menu at South Street is so delicious that it has won multiple awards and nominations, including a TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice Winner award. The nostalgic diner has also been featured on The Food Network and in several films, including The Equalizer starring Denzel Washington.
South Street Diner is also an important piece of Massachusetts history. It is one of the few remaining Worcester Lunch Car Company dining cars. More than 640 of these cars were originally in operation, but sadly, fewer than 100 have survived. South Street first opened as the Blue Diner in 1947, and served as a local spot for Boston’s factory workers to grab a hot meal. Today, it is a popular place to stop for a bite any time of day. The diner draws many regulars (they have a fantastic loyalty program), college students, and even some celebrities. The staff strives to welcome everyone and make them feel a part of the South Street family.
Even if your days of grabbing a bite late into the morning are in the past, a meal at the South Street Diner should be in your future. Stop in with your friends, bring the kids for Sunday brunch, or grab an after-work drink with coworkers. No matter the occasion, you are sure to leave with a full stomach and a memorable experience.
