You’d Never Guess Some Of The Best Italian Food In Maine Is Hiding In This Old Shoe Factory

Calzolaio Pasta Co. in Wilton, Maine, offers homemade Italian cuisine in a historic setting with scenic views of Wilton Stream.

Calzolaio Pasta Co. might not be the first thing that comes to mind when envisioning Maine. When you think of our lovely state, you probably think of the ocean, seafood, and pine trees, because, it's known as the Pine Tree State after all. But, there is a lot more to it than you see on the postcards or what other media may present. Maine is home to some hidden gems, and one of those is Calzolaio Pasta Co. which serves up mouthwatering homemade Italian food, just like your Grandma used to!

Calzolaio Pasta Co. is located in Wilton, a small town in the lakes and mountains region of Maine.

This restaurant has a very unique history as it is located in the building of the original Bass Shoe factory, founded by George Henry Bass in 1876.

Back then, the building was powered by the water of the Wilton Stream, which flows adjacent to the structure.

In 1922, The Portland Co. installed steam boilers, and the logo was the inspiration for the restaurant's logo today. The eatery features a beautiful dine-in space, complete with wooden tables and crystalware.

However, the outside deck of one of the best Italian restaurants in Wilton, Maine is where everyone wants to be when the weather is nice.

The deck has a great view of the Wilton Stream, which is still flowing today. Patrons enjoy listening to the water rush by as they sip their cocktails and dive into big bowls of pasta.

The ingredients used in preparing the food listed on the Calzolaio Pasta Co. menu are top-notch and always fresh.

The restaurant has partnered with local gardens and greenhouses so that the cooks can serve up fresh basil and use local tomatoes - both Heirloom and Roma - for the zesty sauce.

The pasta served at Calzolaio Pasta Co. is always homemade.

It is topped with local herbs and tomatoes, homemade sauces like Alfredo, pesto, and tomato, and plated with care.

The pizza at Calzolaio Pasta Co. is just as carefully crafted as the pasta.

The pies are baked in a brick oven. You can choose from one of the specialty pizzas or create your own. One of the top choices is called "Angry Meat" and it comes with pepperoni, spicy sausage, Virginia ham, mozzarella, and spicy tomato sauce. All the food is made with natural meats.

Before you leave Calzolaio Pasta Co., it's important to exit properly... with a slice of homemade key lime pie in hand!

We love the key lime pie, and the restaurant staff also serves New York cheesecake, tiramisu, carrot cake, and, of course, cannolis.

Calzolaio Pasta Co. offers more information on the website. It may be a long trip for some, but it's definitely worth it for the fresh food and stunning scenery. Plus, you can explore Wilton and other towns around.

Consider taking a hike on Tumbledown Mountain to work up an appetite. And stay all night in a Vrbo of your choice.
