Over the past few years, Maine has become known as a culinary destination. From lobster rolls to ice cream, there's something for everyone. We probably don't mean that literally, unless we're talking about the restaurant in today's article. This place is both whimsical and funky, healthy and decadent. It's got something for everyone, including slices of cake that are as big as your head. And, while love hyperbole around here, we mean the cake thing very literally.
Silly’s got its start in 1988 on Cumberland Avenue, in the building now occupied by Katie Made Bakery.
In 1997, it moved to its current location in a building dating back to 1909, located on Washington Avenue.
Let's start with the overall menu, where every item has a fun, clever name!
Menu items include things like: Oh My Goatness, Gravy Danger, and Owner of a Bacon Heart.
The indoor decor is full of fun things like these figurines, the leg lamp from "A Christmas Story" and...
The MANY photos of customers holding the famous Silly's bumper sticker from all over the world - from French Polynesia to...
...Italy!
The rest of the indoor decor is eclectic and fun as well, providing lots of cozy vibes!
And in the summer, the outdoor patio is cool and bright.
Okay, but really, we're all reading this for the face-sized cake.
Flavors like: Chocolate with chocolate frosting, chocolate with Bailey's frosting, lemon with black raspberry frosting, almond with strawberry frosting, chocolate with mint frosting, vegan chocolate with caramel frosting and salted almonds...we could go on and on!
Special diet? How about a vegan "cocoa-doodle-do?"
And...this creation!
We love that the condiments are kept in old-school lunch boxes!
And, if this dish looks good, ask them to make you a "Kanoodling" which includes rice noodles with Thai peanut sauce and vegetables.
If you're extra hungry, go for the freshly made nachos and some fried pickles on the side.
Dinners are huge!
And so are breakfasts!
Love the look of this? You'll love things like the Caribbean hash with sweet & white potatoes, veggies, sweet fried plantains, jerk seasoning and fried eggs.
For more action, order the fried jalapenos that come with sour cream.
How about some of these little beauties.....rings of fire.
Those who love Silly's, know that there's nothing as soul-warming as the warm glow of this open sign in the distance.
The whimsy of Silly's comes not only from the fun decor, but as you can gather from this article, it also comes from the many different meals and desserts available. It's a difficult feeling to describe in writing, but a trip to Silly's will bring you back in time, fill your belly up and make you feel like you're part of a community...all at the same time!
Silly's is located at 40 Washington Avenue in Portland, Maine 04101. You can call them on (207) 772-0360 and check them out online here.
Another cool, special restaurant? The oldest restaurant in Maine, located in Biddeford!
