This Maine Bakery Has Been Around For 70 Years And We’re Loving Every Second

Botto's Bakery in Portland, Maine, celebrates its 70th anniversary with new and exciting baked goods.

Maine's history is full of highs and lows. From forts to museums to trails, the history here involves things dating as far back as 1000 BCE. While we love this history and tend to write about it quite a bit here at Only in Maine, we have to say that today we're feeling seriously snacky. That means we're particularly proud of our food history which includes celebrating one Maine bakery that's been around for a very, very long time!

Botto's Bakery is a third-generation spot creating handmade Italian breads and pastries for the good people of Portland (and beyond!) every day.

Owned and operated in the same East Deering location since 1949, this family-run business is now in its third generation under the Mathews family.

That's seven decades of sweetness!

Never been to Botto's? Don't worry! There's a good chance you've already tasted their superb craftsmanship because they supply a great deal of Portland's restaurants with fresh bread every single day.

But if you have been inside, you'll know that the sight of their bakery display is a little bit of heaven.

They've got things like whoopie pies.

And, of course, this ricotta cheesecake with almond biscotti crust, and marsala fig sauce that's available by the slice most days.

We love Frittata Fridays. You might recognize this Italian sausage & cheeses Tuscan veggie frittata from one particular Friday.

This year Botto's celebrates their 70th anniversary and you'd be bonkers to think they'd let it go without rolling out something special.

Through 2019 they'll be rolling out new items for us to enjoy. Including this mini sfogliatelle, filled with sweetened ricotta and citrus zest.

February will see two rollouts, the first of which were these cornmeal lime cookies.

The second was the Godfather cupcake, which is a coffee liqueur chocolate cupcake filled with espresso pastry cream. As if that's not great enough, it's then dipped in chocolate ganache and covered with whipped cream and crushed chocolate covered espresso beans. ‬

We're not sure how the rest of the year could possibly top what we've already seen, but we're pretty excited to see how they try!

Botto's Bakery is located at 550 Washington Ave., Portland, Maine. They're open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Saturday from 6 a.m. to noon. They're closed on Sunday.
