It’s not often we highlight the best sandwiches in Louisiana, because po’boys reign supreme down here in the Pelican State. Between the po’boy and the muffuletta, Louisiana certainly can navigate its way between two pieces of bread, and there’s one historic spot that’s serving up some of the best sandwiches in Louisiana. Let’s check it out:
Fertitta’s Delicatessen has been a Shreveport staple since it opened in 1927.
When John and Mary Fulco opened the store nearly a century ago, it opened as a grocery. When the next generation took it over, they added a deli and then a sandwich shop, which was the beginning of where this iconic sandwich originated.
Today, Fertitta’s is the oldest family-run restaurant in Shreveport.
And it’s still owned and operated by the same family.
You can feel the history of the building from the moment you step inside.
Take a moment to admire all of the decor on the walls, a lovely reminder of the longevity of this neighborhood eatery.
The tiny but mighty menu features several sandwiches on the menu, and each one was created by a member of the family.
For example, The Gondolier (pictured above) is a hearty meatball sub that was created by the owner’s first husband. It’s a unique attribute on the menu that reminds you that everything here is family-oriented, and that’s one of the reasons locals continue to come back.
Fertitta’s is known for one very special sandwich, and that’s The Muffy.
A spin on the traditional Muffuletta, this is one sandwich that will awaken your Italian roots... even if you don’t have any!
Created by Papa Sam Fertitta in 1960, The Muffy starts with Cotto salami and Danish ham, then gets a layer of mozzarella cheese, some mustard, and a healthy topping of the famous olive mix.
The Muffy was an instant hit. Over the years, they've created different versions of this famous sandwich, including a vegetarian version.
Italian salads and pizzas are also options on the menu, and you may even love the olive salad so much that you want to take some home.
You’re in luck! Fertitta’s sells many of its products, like the famous olive salad, so you can get a jar to bring home and enjoy the flavors of Fertitta’s from the comfort of your own kitchen.
