The food quality can often be almost the same, especially at some of the best restaurants in NOLA! That's what we were looking for when we compiled this list of the best mom-and-pop restaurants in NOLA that are sure to delight you! These hole-in-the-wall restaurants in NOLA are the cream of the crop.
1. Frady’s One Stop Food Store
A Bywater institution that actually existed in the neighborhood before Katrina hit, Frady’s is known for its french fry po-boy as well as the roast beef po-boy with gravy.
2. Lil Dizzy’s Café
The brunch/lunch buffet here draws crowds as the amazing array of southern favorites in an all-you-can-eat fashion is simply hard to resist. Come hungry to this place.
3. R&O’s
Always packed and filled with the chatter that will remind you of the heyday of this Bucktown institution, this is still an awesome place to dine on Cajun-Italian favorites. And now it even serves pizza!
4. Katie’s Restaurant & Bar
For decades, this neighborhood spot has welcomed all who enter with amazing brunch specials, delicious pizzas, and some awesome New Orleans specialties like Crawfish beignets. Unassuming, grabbing a delicious meal here with friends couldn’t be easier. This is one of the best restaurants in New Orleans.
5. Walker’s Southern Style BBQ
If you’ve ever had the Cochon de Lait po-boy at Jazz Fest and fell in love, then you need to visit this place. It is the originator of that delicious sandwich and offers so much more at its brick-and-mortar place.
6. Please-U-Restaurant
Stepping into Please-U will make you feel like you’re stepping back in time as you sink into one of the booths and have your pick of a variety of southern breakfast and lunch specials with a New Orleans twist. It's the perfect place to recover after a long night! (Editor’s Note: Please-U is temporarily closed until August 12, 2024)
7. Liuzza’s Restaurant & Bar
For a walk back in time that will put a smile on your face and remind you of old New Orleans, stop by Liuzza’s on Bienville. The gumbo alone will not disappoint.
8. Pelican Bay
Pelican Bay was a go-to place for sports fans, serving up delicious cocktails and daiquiris in a fun and friendly atmosphere. Locals loved the nachos! (Editor’s Note: Unfortunately, Pelican Bay is no longer in operation.)
9. Kayla’s Restaurant
This gem of a soul food restaurant offered amazing lunch and dinner plates with awesome sides and a whole lot of flavor. The friendly atmosphere put it over the top. (Editor's Note: Unfortunately, Kayla's Restaurant has closed its doors for good.)
