Well, New Orleans certainly has some good food--all of the recent James Beard awards are here to prove that! But sometimes the best food is hidden away in 'hole in the wall' restaurants. New Orleans has a number of those as well, and we've scoured the city to find the most enticing. Here are the best 'hole in the wall' restaurants in New Orleans, and where you can find them!
1) Red’s Chinese, 3048 St. Claude Ave.
If you blink you could easily miss this restaurant on St. Claude Ave.--but you wouldn't want to. Their creative take on Chinese favorites will keep you coming back again and again.
2) Liuzza’s By the Track, 1518 Lopez St.
This BBQ shrimp po-boy is a main reason I keep returning to this friendly mid-city hang out.
3) Avery’s on Tulane, 2510 Tulane Ave.
Tucked away on Tulane Ave., it could be easy to miss the po-boys and other delicious treats, like the fried potato salad pictured here.
4) Cajun Mike’s, 116 Baronne St.
A CBD treasure that can be easy to skip over, you definitely want to check out the onion rings here.
5) Freret Street Poboy & Donut Shop, 4701 Freret St.
Here's your uptown spot for awesome plate lunches and of course, delicious donuts.
6) Parasol’s Bar & Restaurant, 2533 Constance St.
While ownership might have changed around since Tracy's opened, Parasol's is still a go-to for awesome po-boys and fried pickles.
7) Kukhnya, 2227 St. Claude Ave.
Literally hidden in the back of Siberia, there's just no where else in the city to get awesome Russian and Eastern European treats.
8) Manchu Food Store & Chinese Kitchen, 1413 N. Claiborne Ave.
Yep, don't be surprised by the lines out the door here--the fried chicken is amazing!
9) Hobnobber’s Variety Bar & Restaurant, 139 Carondelet St.
This unassuming place serves up New Orleans favorites and homemade biscuits that are simply delicious.
10) Please-U-Restaurant, 1751 St. Charles Ave.
A truly unique place on St. Charles Ave. that will guarantee good food and interesting characters.
11) Majoria’s Commerce Restaurant, 300 Camp St.
Another CBD hideaway that can be easily overlooked, they have amazing eggs benedict here.
12) Milk Bar, 1514 Delachaise St.
Whew! The sandwiches here are really something special.
13) Sake Don Sushi Bar, 4402 Jefferson Hwy, Jefferson
You would never guess from the outside that there is some amazing sushi being served up in this joint.
