The Snoballs From This Iconic Louisiana Snowball Stand Are A Delicious Summer Treat
Hansen’s Sno-Bliz in New Orleans is a historic snoball stand known for its fine ice and unique flavors.
Warmer temperatures mean snoball stands across the state will begin opening their doors and firing up their machines, serving up all of your favorite flavors. While there are certainly no shortage of snoball stands in Louisiana, there’s one in particular that stands out from the pack, and it’s worth a visit. Hansen’s serves up some of the best snoballs in Louisiana, and it’s been a New Orleans tradition for nearly a century.
Located at the corner of Tchoupitoulas and Bordeaux Street in New Orleans, Hansen’s is the oldest snoball stand in Louisiana.
It all started in the 1930s when Ernest Hansen built an ice-shaving machine for his family.
After a couple of years, the Hansen’s took their invention to the streets, where it was well received.
So well received, in fact, that they opened Hansen’s Sno-Bliz in 1939. Ernest Hansen secured the patent for his machine, the Sno-Bliz in 1950. So in a way, Hansen’s invented snoballs!
Snoballs in Louisiana are different than the snow cones you’d find in other parts of the country.
It all comes down to the ice. Snow cones traditionally use a much more course ice that you can crunch on, while a snoball uses very fine, almost powdery ice that just melts on your tongue.
Hansen's uses only the freshest, top-quality syrups for its snoballs, which is one of the main reasons generations of New Orleanians have stood in line every year.
And of course, the collector's cup.
Hansen's serves up dozens and dozens of different flavors.
From traditional chocolate to earl grey, your options are almost limitless. Hansen's also has a wide range of sugar-free flavors too!
Hansen's is known for its specialty flavors that come through for a short time, like the famous bananas Foster snoball.
These specialty creations sell out fast, so be sure you're following Hansen's on Facebook so you don't miss out this season.
