Kentucky boasts an array of terrific doughnut shops. I love doughnuts. They perfectly accompany a slow weekend morning and a rich cup of coffee. Hi-Five Doughnuts in Louisville, Kentucky, recently moved locations from the Butchertown neighborhood to the Highlands. I had heard from other Louisvillians that the shop was worth checking out, so I set out to try the new location of Hi-Five Doughnuts for myself.

This area, sometimes referred to as “the Loop,” is home to several fantastic local restaurants. Hi-Five Doughnuts opened its new location in early 2024.

Customers know the doughnut shop for its uncommon flavors. When I visited, it offered Lemon Cheesecake, Maple Chocolate Chip, and Run for the Rosé doughnuts, along with more typical flavors.

Hi-Five Doughnuts also sells build-your-own doughnuts. Customers can choose from several delicious glazes, like strawberry and bourbon caramel, and toppings, like sprinkles and bacon.

But wait, there’s more! Hi-Five Doughnuts also serves sandwiches and French toast.

Doughnuts are an ingredient in many dishes, like the Fried Chicken Doughnut Sandwich and Gravy Dippers, doughnut holes served with sausage gravy. Just to the right of the doughnut display is a small area with tote bags, tumblers, charms, and other items for purchase.

With so many mouthwatering options, I had difficulty choosing what to order at this delightful donut shop in Kentucky. I ended up buying three doughnuts. Don’t judge, I couldn't help myself! I chose the Lemon Cheesecake, Homer, and chocolate Long John. They were enormous and absolutely delicious.

The glaze on top of the Lemon Cheesecake doughnut had an unmistakable lemon flavor that was perfectly sweet and not too strong. The Homer, a classic doughnut with glaze and rainbow sprinkles, and the chocolate Long John were more common flavors but had exceptional taste. They had a pillow-like, fluffy texture with sweet, slightly crinkled icing.

Hi-Five Doughnuts is not a huge bakeshop, but there are indoor and outdoor seating areas for customers.

An inside bar seats four people and has views of Harvard Drive. Small bar-top tables outside on the sidewalk are perfect for enjoying a breakfast treat on a cool morning.

Best friends Annie Harlow and Leslie Wilson began Hi-Five Doughnuts with a tent and two tables and eventually moved into a food truck and then into a storefront.

Hi-Five Doughnuts operated in Butchertown for six years. It is the only female-owned and operated doughnut food truck and store in Louisville!
