I Ordered the M&M Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich in Louisville and It Took Up the Entire Plate

Nothing makes me feel like a kid again quite like an ice cream sandwich. My childhood summers had bits of absolute perfection—catching fireflies, late-night swims, and cold, sweet ice cream sandwiches. We usually had the standard variety straight from the freezer, with creamy vanilla ice cream between chocolate wafers. Occasionally, we mixed it up with chocolate chip cookies or a different flavor of ice cream; all varieties were delicious. Now, decades later, when I want a sugary dose of nostalgia in the form of a decadent ice cream sandwich, I go to Ehrler's Ice Cream in Louisville, Kentucky.

Ehrler's has a long history of serving delicious ice cream in Louisville. The business dates back to 1867, when a Louisvillian named Joseph Maria Ehrler established a milk farm. Over time, the business expanded to 20 Ehrler's Dairy Stores throughout the city. In the 1970s, the family sold their company, and over time, under a series of new owners, the stores closed. In 2015, two new owners, Bradley Hill and Chris Kersey, bought the business. They opened stores on East Main Street downtown and on Bardstown Road in the Highlands neighborhood, bringing a beloved local business back to life.

Ehrler's serves a variety of amazing ice cream treats. Customers can enjoy flavors such as Bourbon Pecan Fudge, Butter Pecan, Strawberry, and Cookies n' Cream in a cup or cone. It also serves sundaes, milkshakes, floats, and of course, ice cream sandwiches. Customers can build their ice cream sandwiches just how they like, with their favorite variety of cookies and ice cream.

I recently visited the Highlands location and chose two M&M cookies and vanilla ice cream for my ice cream sandwich. The sandwich was enormous, with two thick, rich cookies and likely around two scoops of ice cream. It filled the dessert plate that the helpful staff member placed it on. Although its size made it a challenge to eat, it was a challenge I was up for. The spoon definitely helped! The flavor was incredible, and it took me right back to my childhood summers.

The Highlands location has both indoor and outdoor seating options. Outside, customers can enjoy their treats sitting at two round picnic tables or on two long benches. Inside, the wooden tables are surrounded by bright orange chairs. There's also a bank of bar seating that overlooks the bustling intersection of Bardstown Road and Trevilian Way. The decor features a neon sign that reads, "Make everyday a sundae," and photos of historic Ehrler's Dairy Stores from the past. Consider stopping in the next time you're near Ehrler's; you won't regret it!
