The Timeless Kansas Restaurant Everyone Needs To Visit At Least Once

When Kansas became a state, and railroads began weaving their way across the countryside, hotels and restaurants began popping up all over the place, in hopes of a rush of new customers. This timeless restaurant has stood the test of time, and in my opinion, won. Here you'll find a warm atmosphere, and warmer fried chicken dinners.

Way back in the 1870s, right after Kansas became a state, this hotel was a warm and welcoming stop along the Chisholm trail, where railroads were supposed to develop and bring business with them.

Originally known as the Cowtown Cafe, this spot has been through many owners and many customers. It suffered for a while when the railroads ended up going through Junction City instead of near the Hotel, causing them to lose the business of future travelers, but it persisted.

It survived, however, through the business of local soldiers during WWII, making sure it was known to be the best place around for a family style chicken dinner, first served in 1915.

The hotel was later relocated to Abilene in 2000, to a building recreating the original design, and now serves the same dinners as it did so long ago.
