It's high time for some nostalgia about our favorite foods. Some dishes you can order at any small town restaurant, but other dishes just aren't right unless they're made by family. These Kansas style dishes might make you feel warm inside (or just plain hungry) and wishing for the good ol' days. Everything from snacks to dessert is included, but which are your favorites?
1.Skillet fried chicken
Look, this is just the beginning of a whole debate about fried chicken. If you've ever visited Pittsburg, Kansas, you'll know what I mean.
2. Chicken and noodles (not soup) over mashed potatoes
It's alright if there's some broth left in there, but if you add soup to your mashed potatoes, you'll just end up with thicker soup.
3. Chicken fried (do you see a trend?) steak
We like chicken a lot, and chicken fried steak or chicken fried chicken are both amazing meals you'll find at any Kansas diner that knows their customers.
4. Cinnamon rolls and chili
This is most definitely a Kansas only thing, because we're the only ones sensible enough to pair these two wonderful items together.
5. Butter on saltines.
This one might not be for the younger Kansans, but butter on saltines is a snack many of us love that doesn't seem to be common at all anywhere else.
6. Bierocks
This amazing creation has become a Kansas sensation, as long as you don't buy them from Runza.
7. Biscuits and gravy
Sausage (or bacon if you're fancy) gravy is best served on top of fluffy homemade biscuits in the mornings.
8. Breakfast for dinner in general.
Or in the evenings! Breakfast for dinner is more common in the Midwest for some reason, but why would people deny themselves pancakes just because it's 5 p.m.?
9. Goulash (or American Chop Suey)
No matter which name you've grown up with, hamburger, tomatoes, and noodles make their way into this bowl to become goulash. There's plenty of household variants that include other items though!
10. Cinnamon sugar bread
A slice of sandwich bread toasted, buttered, and covered with cinnamon sugar is the best treat you can get. Bonus points if they heat it in the oven too!
11. Homemade pies
Whether your neighbor has an apple tree or you just have a family member who loves baking, homemade pies are a big part of Kansas diners because we can't get enough of them.
