Czech Village in Cedar Rapids is a one-of-a-kind place, a home away from home for the many Iowa residents who trace their heritage back to the Czech Republic. And what better way to celebrate heritage or learn about a new culture than by eating their best treats? Sykora Bakery, a hole-in-the-wall that makes its own bread and pastries daily, is the last old-school Czech bakery in Iowa - and once you try the specialties, you'll know it's one of a kind.

Sykora Bakery is an institution in Cedar Rapids - and it's bringing history along with delicious baked goods.

The bakery has been operating in one form or another since 1903 when it was founded in the basement of an inn next to a barbershop.

Today, it's a modern bake shop in the middle of the Czech Village, but the pastries are still old-school!

You'll always find a huge selection of Kolaches for sale in every color and flavor imaginable. If you have a favorite, make sure to get there early!

The Kolaches are always on offer along with a wide selection of American pastries and cookies.

If you're lucky, you'll be there when they have paczki - the pillowy donuts filled with custard or jam.

The old-schoolers who have been here for a decade may or may not have a sweet tooth - but you can bet they'll be leaving with a loaf of the bakery's famous caraway rye.

If you have a heartier appetite, keep an eye out for the bakery's lunch specials - like this rich roast pork plate with dumplings and potato salad.

The bakery also offers a small selection of packaged goods, like jams to go with your assorted baked treats.

One thing that isn't old-school? The giant stuffed giraffe named Bo, who has become a mascot of the bakery over the years. The founders never predicted this in 1903!
