We've all got that one amazing local restaurant that basically defines our town, and when they stick around long enough, they become part of the very fiber of the town. That makes it all the more heartbreaking when one closes its doors for good, whether due to retirement, financial issues, or changing times. But once in a while, one of these icons rises from the grave - and in one amazing Iowa comeback story, that's exactly what happened to a Denison cafe. Cronk's Cafe is an Iowa icon, open since 1929 serving reasonably-priced breakfast, lunch, and dinner to weary travelers. But it closed its doors for good in May 2020 - or so it seemed. This local favorite reopened in November 2023 under new management - and they've made some big changes to the menu and the atmosphere.
Cronk's Cafe is once again serving hungry diners - but there might be some big surprises for longtime visitors.
The beloved Denison institution closed its doors in 2020, amid a difficult time for the restaurant industry - but it's now under new ownership.
The restaurant has been open since late 2023, and it had a big ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate a new era - and a new cuisine.
Some things are still the same - including the massive, hearty breakfast plates, dished up bright and early each morning.
But the new owners are Mexican-American, and they've brought a big punch of authentic flavor to the new menu.
Look for specials like fajitas, posole, and other Mexican classics alongside Midwestern standbys.
This extends to the revamped bar, as well - so prepare for some serious flavors in your next drink!
