Eat Asian-Fusion And Be Serenaded By Celebrity Impersonators At This Family-Owned Tiki-Themed Illinois Restaurant

One of the best things about Illinois is the plethora of fantastic, local dining options. Personally, I love walking into a themed diner and seeing all the heart and soul put into the concept and design. Plus, add in some quirky cocktails and fun twists on comfort classics and I am sold. This unique tiki restaurant in North Riverside, Illinois checks all those boxes and more — and the local owners are so beloved a neighborhood street was even named in their honor.

Chef Shangri-La, 7930 W. 26th St., is a family-owned Asian-fusion restaurant and bar that has been serving the community since 1976. In 2020, the street the diner is on was given an honorary designation as Paul and Susie Fong Drive, after the restaurant's founders.

The unique restaurant showcases a fun tropical-tiki vibe, with bamboo, lantern lights, murals, and artwork.

The owners left no stone untouched — literally — when designing the theme of this restaurant, truly making it a feast for the eyes (as well as the stomach).

The dining rooms have multiple seating layouts making it a great space for couples, families, or even larger parties.

The booths fully immerse you into the experience.

The first thing you should order is one of the delicious tropical drinks. The signature drink is the Dr. Fong — a fruity cocktail made with a secret recipe that's a must for first-timers and regulars, alike.

Fun fact: The Dr. Fong drink is named after one of the co-owners, who is a real doctor!

Sip on your drink while enjoying some classic Chinese appetizers, like the beloved egg rolls.

But make sure to save plenty of room for the main course, which blends the flavors of China, Peru, Thailand, the United States, Japan and more to create savory dishes sure to soothe the soul.

My suggestion: Add on fresh creations like this beautiful, artful sushi for a well-rounded meal.

One of the best and most unique aspects of Chef Shangri-La is its live entertainment. Each week sees a lineup of top-notch celebrity impersonators, hula dancers, live musicians, and more. Many patrons come for both an incredible dinner and and incredible show.

Performers channeling the likes of icons like Elvis, Tina Turner, Billy Joel, Rod Stewart, and more are among some of the regular headliners.
