People Travel Across Illinois Just To Eat At This Hidden Gem Restaurant

Do you like Mexican food as much as we do? If you are looking for a low-key location, one whose focus is on traditional Mexican comfort food, in a festive atmosphere, meet us in Buffalo Grove. I believe we have found a place where people travel across Illinois just to eat at this hidden gem restaurant. And if they don’t, they should. We call it Mi Mexico.

Buffalo Grove is a northwest suburb of Chicago. Here you will find Mi Mexico, our hidden gem - open for lunch and dinner, seven days a week.

There is plenty of parking in the back.

Inside the ambience is merry, with brightly-colored chairs.

Mi Mexico offers many classics – burritos, fajitas, tacos, and more.

The portions are generous, and many dishes include beans and rice, and homemade coleslaw. We like to order guacamole as an appetizer.

The salads are fresh, and served on colorful platters.

There is a low-calorie section on the menu – try the spinach quesadillas.

Even if you think you simply can’t eat another bite, save room for the fried ice cream – it is a masterpiece to behold with its whipped cream and chocolate sauce.

If you get Santos as your waiter, please give him our regards – he has been here since the beginning. He used to happily entertain our children with bits of Spanish conversation, back when they were learning Spanish in school.

The menu is extensive. You will likely be seated by the owner of this family-run business.

If you come for your birthday, you may get to wear the honorary sombrero as my father-in-law did for his 85th – and receive an impressive candle in your ice cream.

Margaritas may be the drink of choice, but also popular is the sangria – in red or white.

Mi Mexico is coming up on its 15th anniversary.

On a Saturday night, you might hear local live music.

My friends and I would be people who travel across Illinois just to eat at this hidden gem restaurant. We rejoice in the fact that it is not too far from us, so we can drop in when the mood strikes. Visit the Mi Mexico Facebook page for more details.

Check out charming nearby Long Grove for shops, restaurants, and a winery, and a hidden gem museum.
