The Land of Lincoln is home to many notable eating establishments rich in history. Indulge yourself and plan a visit to a lively eatery loaded with local history: Hackney’s, with two locations in Glenview, Illinois, has been serving up food and fun to the community since the 1930s.
Hackney’s on Harms is the restaurant’s original location.
In the beginning, during Prohibition, Jack Hackney and his wife Bebe delighted Glenview residents with hamburgers and beer served from the back porch of their home. In 1939, Jim and Kitz Masterson, just married, agreed to buy the restaurant, for one dollar. As World War II began, soldiers at the camp in Harms Woods, across the street, were frequent customers of Hackney’s.
In 1955, Jim Masterson purchased Engels Restaurant from his parents. This became what we know today as Hackney’s second location, Hackney’s on Lake, also in Glenview.
Hackney’s is perhaps best-known for the juicy, half-pound Hackneyburger. Try it served on rye, for an authentic treat. The menu includes additional burgers and other tasty fare as well.
Make sure to sample Hackney’s Original French Fried Onions, a crispy and decadent signature dish.
In 1957, so the story is told, a regular customer, who usually ordered perch, was on his way into the restaurant. The owner, Mr. Masterson, realized they had run out of fish. He quickly left for the Hackney’s on Lake location, where he knew they had fish. Before he left, he gave instructions to the cook to whip up something new and fantastic for the customer while he was gone. Hackney’s Original French Fried Onions were created and have been a staple on the menu ever since.
Drop in for some live music at the Hackney’s on Harms location when the weather is fine. Meanwhile, enjoy al fresco dining on the patio.
Finally, don't forget to visit on St. Patrick’s Day, a spirited tradition throughout Chicagoland, that is quite entertaining at Hackney’s. Get your fill of corn beef and cabbage and enjoy a green beer on tap, while you listen to a live band playing an Irish jig.
Come out and join in the festivities at Hackney’s, at either location in Illinois. See the full menu and learn more by viewing Hackney's website, or visit one of the Facebook pages: Hackney’s on Harms or Hackney's on Lake.
