The One Small Town In Illinois With Delicious BBQ Food On Every Corner

Murphysboro, Illinois, is a small town renowned for its exceptional BBQ restaurants, 17th St BBQ and Pat's BBQ and Catering.

Any time a list of great BBQ in the United States comes out, the majority of respect is given to joints located in states like Tennessee, Kansas, and North Carolina. And rightfully so. Cities like Memphis and Kansas City have earned that crown thanks to years of honing their delicious smoked meats. But it's important to give credit where it's due, and sometimes cities that make great food end up sneaking through the cracks. That's where this small town in the Land of Lincoln comes in. While it's just a small town, it boasts two highly praised BBQ restaurants, making Murphysboro, Illinois, hog heaven for BBQ lovers!

Murphysboro is located in Jackson County in the southern part of Illinois, and according to the 2020 census, the city's population is just over 7,000 people. But that doesn't stop it from having two highly-praised BBQ restaurants that attract visitors from far and wide.

Opened in 1985 by champion pitmaster Mike Mills, 17th St BBQ has been praised by publications such as Restaurants & Institutions Magazine, and Bon Apetit who called them the "best ribs in the U.S."

Yes, the ribs get much of the praise. But the menu also includes highlights such as brisket, pork shoulder, chicken, and pork rinds.

Pat's BBQ and Catering is another must if you're traveling to Murphysboro. The food receives high ratings and is often praised for its affordable prices.

Like the other spot in town, their ribs are excellent, but there might be even more buzz about their pulled pork sandwiches. The menu also features hits like brisket and rib tip, as well as classic sides like green beans, cole slaw, and potato salad.
