Walking into The Sand Bar in Tybee Island, Georgia, you would likely draw your eyes to the thousands of dollar bills stuck to every surface, floor to ceiling.

But all that has changed recently, as owner Jennifer Knox decided to take all of the dollar bills down and give them to her unemployed staff.

Since the coronavirus pandemic, Tybee Island, which is usually bustling with people as the weather gets warmer, has been quiet.

The Sand Bar had to close its doors like many other restaurants in the areas due to the stay-at-home orders put in place.

Knox, who sat in her empty bar in March was struggling to find a way to help her now unemployed staff until she looked around and saw hope.

For the past 15 years, patrons of The Sand Bar have been leaving behind mementos on the walls and ceilings in the form of dollar bills—each guest would write a message on the dollar and staple it up for all to see.

With the help of five volunteers, Knox ending up taking three and a half days to remove all of the money stapled throughout the place.

In total, the amount collected was $3,714—but after hearing about what Knox was doing for her employees, locals chipped in bringing the total to $4,104 which went to help the staff.

While Knox still doesn’t know what the future holds for The Sand Bar right now, she did what she had to do in order to care for her employees during these uncertain times.
