Dine Like a Local at This Cozy Bar in Savannah, Georgia

Step off the typical tourist path and enjoy a bite and a brew at this delightfully cozy bar!

I'm from Savannah, and when I return to my hometown, I prefer to check out some of the spots that are beloved by locals and not necessarily popular tourist haunts. One of my favorites in this category is The Black Rabbit, a little bar with an incredibly cozy atmosphere. I'm not a big drinker, but in addition to a full bar menu, this place has a small menu of delightful sandwiches and salads that make a perfect, homey meal. There's always great music playing, and while it's sometimes a bit crowded late at night, I've never found it to be overly noisy or uncomfortable (and I'm someone that doesn't care for crowds). It's one of my favorite restaurants in Savannah and always fun for a late-night snack.

The restaurant is tucked away downtown, just outside the hustle and bustle of the tourist district, so it tends to mostly attract locals and students from the local art college. It's small but has plenty of seating, plus outdoor dining areas for warm weather days.

The decor is eclectic, with colorful vintage paintings all over the wall and a cramped, but not claustrophobic vibe. It's the very epitome of cozy, whether you're enjoying a drink at the bar or a meal at a table.

The menu is small and basic but has a good variety of sandwiches and salads on offer. This was one of my dad's favorite restaurants, and when I was in town handling his affairs after he passed away last year, a grilled cheese sandwich from The Black Rabbit felt ever-so-cozy; and it was just about the only thing I could manage to keep down. Sitting at "our" table by the window made me feel like he was there with me.

With large portions and reasonable prices, this place always reminds me of a modern-day, old-school diner, the type of spot where locals gather for drinks and to share stories. The food is surprisingly top shelf for a bar, and no matter what you get, you'll enjoy quality ingredients and superb flavor. Unlike many bars, the food menu is available even late at night, making it a wonderful option for anyone seeking food after a night of festivities downtown.
