Quirky and food don't always go hand in hand. Most often, we go out to dine for an out-of-this-world menu and exquisite scenery. But every so often, we stumble upon a restaurant that is so charmingly bizarre that it turns our act of going out to dine into an entertaining experience. That's certainly the case when it comes to the Monkey Bar in Florida. This seafood restaurant in Homosassa is truly one-of-a-kind. Let's just say it doesn't get any quirkier, or more lovable, than live monkeys frolicking nearby.
Step into the Monkey Bar in Homosassa, Florida and there’s no missing the theme of this restaurant.
While there are no actual monkeys on the premises of the restaurant, a quick gander across the river reveals a truly unique site: Monkey Island.
This small island is the home of five spider monkeys, who happily dwell on the tiny piece of land on the Homosassa River. These monkeys were moved from a wildlife attraction and given this new home where they are fed and looked after. From the restaurant’s outdoor seating you can spot the creatures swinging from ropes and climbing up on various platforms, including the island’s miniature lighthouse.
This island is under strict surveillance; however, dining at the Monkey Bar proves the perfect viewing place for this lively entertainment. The river itself also makes for a gorgeous setting as you glimpse the menu and decide on a delicious seafood entree.
As you can see by the photographs above, the food is mouthwatering and often served in generous portions. But the crab, shrimp, fresh catches and more will have to compete for your attention as you enjoy the atmosphere of the tiki bar and watch the surrounding wildlife.
Surrounded by the tropical mix of water, swaying trees, and active monkeys, you'll truly feel as though you've entered a new world.
And of course, since you are in the beautiful state of Florida, you owe it to yourself to enjoy a slice of homemade Key Lime pie.
