Old New Castle is a beautiful section of a beautiful city, where history and modern times meet to create a unique, welcoming environment. Reenactors take to the streets on many days, and even the coldest, blustery day will put a smile on your face as you walk through the streets in this quaint section of New Castle. Hidden amongst the many treasures is a tavern so unique that you'll feel like you're getting into a time machine when you walk through the door.
As you wander through Old New Castle, you'll begin to feel like you're stepping back in time.
Reenactors and colonial enthusiasts love to hang out here, particularly during the holidays and specific event days celebrating the rich heritage of Old New Castle.
As you continue to explore the town, you'll soon stumble across a portal to another century.
Whether you're heading out of Battery Park, walking down The Strand, or shopping at quaint stores on Delaware Street, it's inevitable that soon you'll notice the smell of fine food drifting out of a nearby tavern.
And pretty soon, you'll arrive at 114 Delaware St.
This building is over 300 years old and is now home to Jessop's Tavern, a colonial restaurant that aims to keep the culinary history of New Castle alive.
When you first walk in, you'll notice something's different about this place.
The hosts greet you in colonial attire and soon you'll realize just how authentic Jessop's Tavern remains.
The dining rooms are arranged in a way that makes you feel like you're dining in the 1700s.
Of course, there are modern amenities at Jessops - you don't have to worry about struggling to eat without utensils! In fact, the whole tavern is cozy and comfortable.
Jessop's Tavern is committed to serving an authentic bill of fare.
The cuisine remains representative of English, Dutch, Belgian & Swedish cultures that shaped our region. Nearly everything is made from scratch, and unlike many themed restaurants, the quality of the food is just as important to Jessop's as is the colonial experience.
The Shepherd's Pie is a favorite of nearly everyone who tries it.
It doesn't get any more authentic when it comes to English Cuisine and Shepherd's Pie, right? Luckily, Jessop's Tavern does this classic dish right, and you'll want to return and order it again and again.
There are so many options, you might have a hard time deciding what to order!
Between the unbelievable Dutch cheese, the filling and hearty English fare, the old American dishes that remind you of the past and more - there's really no way to go wrong with your order. There's enough variety on the menu that you won't ever have to get the same thing twice.
And of course, what's a colonial pub without a pint of beer?
Jessop's Tavern embraces modernity with their bar, one of the only things that will remind you that you're visiting in the 21st century, and not the 17th century. Order your favorite brew, or try one of the 300+ Belgian Beers that are imported to keep with the feeling of a colonial pub.
No matter what you order, you're sure to leave Jessop's feeling full - of both food, and appreciation for Delaware's history.
And, of course, if the 300+ year old building doesn't make you immediately appreciate Delaware, you'll certainly be convinced by the Woodside Creamery Ice Cream, made right here in the First State. It's the best ice cream out there, so even if you don't have time for a full meal, you can get the Jessop's Tavern experience any time.
Of course, Jessop's Tavern isn't the only unique restaurant in the state - we published a list of 10 unique restaurants in Delaware that you really should check out, too. Never be bored dining in the Diamond State again!
