If you're going to indulge in a doughnut, we feel you really should indulge in something truly delicious. Chain store doughnuts are fine and all, but they just don't cut it when Delaware has plenty of other, homemade-style options - like the brioche-style, made-from-scratch doughnuts at this Wilmington coffee shop. Let's take a look at what makes Sleeping Bird Coffee the purveyor of the best doughnuts in Delaware.

Sleeping Bird Coffee opened in May 2021, a dream realized by wife and husband Leigh Ann Tona and Zach DeLong. Originally a mobile coffee truck, the brick-and-mortar shop quickly became a community staple.

It's an inviting space in which to grab a latte, but that's not the only thing on the menu. Sleeping Bird Coffee also sells made-from-scratch sandwiches, pastries, salads, and of course...

...Doughnuts! Sold from Tuesdays through Thursdays, these delicious, homemade, brioche-style doughnuts are consistently named by Delaware doughnut lovers as the best in the state.

In fact, they're so popular that in the past, Sleeping Bird has sold its own Sleeping Bird Doughnut Club t-shirts.

Who wouldn't want to be a part of this club?

There are so many unique flavors on offer, like raspberry cream and raspberry glaze with roasted chopped pistachios. Holiday flavors have included standouts like eggnog with gingerbread crumble.

You'll also often find classics with a little twist, like these Boston cream doughnuts with malted vanilla pastry cream. If you want a taste, be sure to get there early, because these much-beloved treats sell out quickly.

Because Sleeping Bird Coffee's doughnuts are so popular, owners Leigh Ann Tona and Zach Delong are opening a new venture in the summer of 2024 - Sleeping Bird Doughnuts! It will be located at 4001 Concord Pike, directly behind Lucky's Diner. While there won't be any seating, there will be plenty of parking for grab-and-go orders.

While we eagerly await the opening of Sleeping Bird Doughnuts, we'll just have to settle for a delicious coffee and sweet treat at Sleeping Bird Coffee. Such a terribly cruel fate.
