Much like we shouldn't judge a book by its cover, judging a restaurant by its exterior could mean missing out on some delicious food. And there are plenty of eateries in the Buffalo area that don't look like much from the outside but serve seriously tasty meals inside. These are seven of them.
1. Suzy Q's Barbeque Shack, 2829 Niagara St.
Suzy Q's advertises Not Fine Dining, Just Fine BBQ, and that seems to be a fine motto for this laid-back little eatery. The food here speaks for itself.
2. Vizzi's Restaurant, 967 Kenmore Ave.
Don't let the unassuming exterior fool you. Vizzi's serves some of the best burgers in town, not to mention their famous Beef on Weck, which comes piled high with perfectly cooked meat.
3. Mineo's South Pizzeria, 2154 S Park Ave.
If you grew up eating Mineo's pizza, you already know how fantastic it is. But if you're new to Buffalo, don't make the mistake of passing this place up.
4. Mandy's Cafe, 3796 Clinton St., West Seneca
This little hole-in-the-wall is a beloved local icon, serving tasty bar food in this cozy, intimate space. Mandy's Cafe is a true hidden gem.
5. Swannie House, 170 Ohio St.
This place is a historic gem and the perfect spot for a casual meal. Not only do they have 35 cent wings on Sundays, they have an award-winning fish fry that really hits the spot.
6. Toutant, 437 Ellicott St.
Inside this blink-and-you'll-miss-it building lies some of the best Southern-inspired food you'll ever try. The menu focuses on high-quality seasonal ingredients, all influenced by the chef's Louisiana roots.
7. Osteria 166, 166 Franklin St.
The entrance to this Italian spot is small, but the flavors in the food are quite big. It's no wonder they've become a local favorite.
Some of these restaurants could definitely fall into the "hole in the wall" category. Ironically, the nearby Hole in the Wall Restaurant is anything but. This place is a historic gem and the perfect spot for a casual meal.
