When it comes to ice cream, Boston is a frozen wonderland year round! While there are many places to indulge, there’s one spot that scoops up coconut-based ice cream that is more than a match for its dairy competitors.
People often think of dairy-free or vegan ice cream as poor substitutes for the real thing and, in years past, that might have been valid. However, FoMu is revolutionizing our concept of ice cream and its small batch parlors attract crowds who easily choose these frozen treats over traditional ice creameries.
FoMu has three locations. The ones in Allston…
…and JP are housed in tiny stores. But don’t be fooled by their diminutive size.
Not only do the stores contain ice cream, they also squeeze in a mini-bakery. It's perfect for when you’re craving an ice cream sandwich!
Flavors here rotate, but you can usually find the eternally popular sweet lavender on the menu.
Keep an eye out for the avocado ice cream (pictured), and the fresh mint as well – the use of fresh mint leaves makes the latter stand out.
However, it’s the creamy, rich texture of the ice cream that really blows you away. FoMu uses minimal air to create a consistency like that of gelato.
The standard base consists of coconut milk combined with organic agave and cane sugar. Some of the seasonal flavors branch out with cashews, almonds, or fruit as the base.
Everything is made in small batches and by hand.
Load up at the toppings bar, when you’ll find classics like gummies and jimmies.
Sundaes are available…
…as are ice cream cakes.
Once you fully succumb to a FoMu addiction, it’s good to know that you can load up on pints!
The first FoMu store launched in 2012 and there are now three shops.
If you’re looking to linger, head to the one on Tremont Street – it’s larger than the others has more of a coffeehouse vibe.
Boston’s love affair with FoMu shows no signs of flagging. If you haven’t tried a scoop yet, you really should see why the hype is justified.
