Manhattan’s Legendary Comfort Soup Is the Alaskan Classic You Can’t Miss

Manhattan’s Restaurant and Lounge in Anchorage has quietly built a reputation for serving up hearty, reliable comfort food. And at the heart of its menu? Their famous Creamy Pepperjack Chicken and Rice soup. This is the kind of soup you dream about, especially on cold Alaskan winter days.

We stopped in last weekend for a family dinner, and I knew exactly what I was going to order. This soup has been a favorite of mine since I had it for the first time last year, so I tend to build my order around it. I ordered a big bowl with a side salad, though, truthfully, the salad barely got touched. The soup is thick and creamy, with only a little pepperjack heat. To be honest, it’s more cheesy than spicy. My husband opted for a cheeseburger and a side of soup — he knows better than to pass it up entirely — and our five-year-old stuck to a classic cheeseburger with fries. (A quick heads-up: Manhattan’s doesn’t have a dedicated kids’ menu, so little ones will be ordering off the standard menu. Luckily, the portions are generous, so you can easily share if needed.)

The drink menu here is another highlight. With a great mix of classic cocktails, a solid beer selection, and reasonably priced wine, there’s something for everyone. For Anchorage, the prices at Manhattan’s are surprisingly affordable, which makes it even easier to justify eating out.

The atmosphere is laid-back and inviting, with a mix of string lights, cozy seating, and a friendly staff that seems genuinely happy to have you there. The servers have always been fabulous, and they are a big part of why we keep coming back!

Pro Tip: Go for the bowl of soup. The cup just isn’t enough. And if you’re planning a full meal, consider splitting a salad or appetizer so you can save room for what really matters. You can thank me later.
