There are plenty of places to get your sugar fix. Candy is sold in every grocery store and lots of other retail stores, too. Although most of our candy now comes from giant factories, the art of making candy the old-fashioned way is still alive at this fascinating shop in Florida.
Lofty Pursuits is a classic soda fountain in Tallahassee's that serves some of the best breakfast and desserts in the city. They have 52 different sundaes (one for every Sunday on the calendar) and other ice cream creations.
Lofty Pursuits is also home to Public Displays of Confection, a team of candy experts that makes dazzling hard candies using traditional Victorian-era techniques and antique machines and molds.
Even their candy canes are designed to reflect more light and have a beautiful bejeweled appearance that dollar-a-dozen ones don't. (And they taste better, too.)
Their gorgeous handmade candies make a great gift any time of year, but especially during the holidays. They can also create custom candies for weddings and other events.
Although it isn't guaranteed, the best times to catch the candy-makers at work are during the week in the afternoon, on Friday evenings or on Saturdays.
You can also catch a candy cane demonstration at the shop's event, "A Very Lofty Christmas," on December 9th from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. There will also be live music, face painting, and photos with Santa.
If you can’t be there in person, you should check out this video made by Public Displays of Confection about the history of candy canes and how they make this classic holiday treat:
Lofty Pursuits is located at 1355 Market Street #A11 in Tallahassee, FL, right off of I-10, inside the Verandas on Market Street.
