What happens when passions collide? Step into Scottie’s Bait shop and you'll find out. This is a little store like no other, one that has dozens of varieties of Wisconsin cheese and all the bait you need for a weekend in the Northwoods. It’s a unique shop and it’s worth a visit if you’re in the Three Lakes area. Here’s what you need to know about Scottie’s Bait & Tackle, the cheesiest bait shop in Wisconsin.
Three Lakes is a Northwoods Community in Oneida County.
It’s surrounded by lakes that are teeming with fish, and it has drawn generations of anglers.
In the heart of Three Lakes, you’ll find Scottie’s Bait Shop.
From the outside, it looks like any bait shop. But inside, there’s a bit of a surprise.
You’ll find all the trappings of the bait shop, including minnows, leeches, and night crawlers.
But one end of the store has been taken over by the Three Lakes Cheese Haus, and it has a large and well-curated selection of Wisconsin cheeses. There are over 50 varieties of Wisconsin cheese!
I chatted with the store's friendly owner, Scottie Brandenburg, and he explained that he used to be a farmer, and after a stint in the corporate world, he later worked for a cheese factory.
But he also loves fishing, and he wanted to live in the Northwoods.
The store was the answer. “We’re the home of curds and crawlers,” he said. “But don’t get the bags mixed up, or the fish will be happier than you will be.”
The store has fresh curds every Friday at 11 a.m. and every Saturday at 9 a.m. - it also sells local cheese spreads, honey, maple syrup, and wild rice.
And if you need bait, or some advice on where the fish are biting, you can get that too. Just don’t mix up the curds and crawlers!
I love discovering Wisconsin’s small town businesses. Next time I’m in Three Lakes, I know where to stock up on cheese... or bait.
