In northeast Wisconsin, spectacular views and limestone ruins draw thousands of visitors to High Cliff State Park. But this park has another feature that’s accessible, peaceful and beautiful - a paved trail that loops around two small lakes. It’s called the Butterfly Pond Nature Trail and it’s a peaceful experience for all nature lovers. Here’s what you need to know about this paved loop trail in Wisconsin:
High Cliff State Park is one of Wisconsin’s most popular state parks. It’s located in Sherwood, just south of Appleton and it’s close to places like Neenah, Menasha, Oshkosh, and the Fox Cities.
The park is right along the shore of Lake Winnebago and it’s named for the towering limestone bluffs that flank the lake’s shore.
The park has a lot of great attractions There’s a soft sand swimming beach, ruins of old lime kilns and bluff top trails with amazing views. There’s even a 40-foot observation tower that offers a panoramic vista of the surrounding area.
But one of the best attractions keeps you a little closer to earth. The paved Butterfly Pond Nature Trail travels around two small bodies of water that are teeming with wildlife.
The trail is paved and includes the 0.4-mile East Loop and the 0.7-mile West Loop. This paved loop trail takes visitors through beautiful Wisconsin wetland, prairie, and forest ecosystems.
The trail can be completed in as little as 23 minutes, but most people want to take more time. There are plenty of places to take in the wonders of nature, including three wildlife viewing platforms, an accessible fishing pier, a gazebo, and a rock resting area.
If you’re lucky, you may even see a few butterflies!
