There’s nothing like taking in the power of a wild Wisconsin River as it roars over a waterfall. In one special Wisconsin park, you can not only see the river from the shore but can also walk across the tumbling water via two scenic footbridges. Amnicon Falls State Park is located in far northern Wisconsin, in Douglas County. It’s a short drive south of the city of Superior. It’s one of the most beautiful of Wisconsin state parks.

The forested park covers 828 acres, which is divided by the Amnicon River. In the 1800s, loggers used this wild river to float logs down to Lake Superior.

Today, the river draws more photographers and nature lovers than loggers. As it passes through the park, it roars over two pretty waterfalls. We love this bridge hike in Wisconsin.

The Upper Falls in the park flow over basalt, and the Lower Falls flow over sandstone. It’s easy to get a view of both waterfalls with a short hike in the park.

An open footbridge and a historic covered footbridge each offer ideal vantage points of the falls. The covered footbridge is very old – while its exact date of construction is unknown, it has been in the park since 1930.

If you feel like a longer hike, there are two miles of hiking trails that will give you additional vantage points. There’s also a campground on site that’s perfect for a Northwoods camping getaway.
