The Most-Photographed Lighthouse In Wisconsin Is On The Door Peninsula
Cana Island Lighthouse in Door County, Wisconsin, is the most photographed lighthouse in the area and is open to the public for tours.
Wisconsin is no stranger to lovely lighthouses. However, there’s one that seems to stand out above the rest – and it’s the Cana Island Lighthouse. Despite being one of several lighthouses in Door County, the Cana Island beacon remains the area’s most photographed lighthouse. And unlike many of the state’s lighthouses, the Cana Island Lighthouse is open to the public for tours. Take a look:
With 300 miles of coastline and 11 lighthouses, Door County boasts one of the highest concentrations of lighthouses of any county in the country!
And of the 11 beautiful lighthouses that fill the county, the Cana Island Lighthouse takes the title of the most photographed.
It’s also been deemed one of the top six must-see Door County lighthouses.
As historic as it is charming, the lighthouse dates back to 1869.
Today, it’s part of the Door County Maritime Museum and is open for tours.
During the tour, you’ll have the opportunity to climb the 97-step spiral staircase to the lighthouse’s gallery deck.
From the gallery deck, you’ll be treated to incredible views of Lake Michigan, making the climb up completely worth the effort.
Despite being located on an island, the lighthouse is easy to access since a cobblestone causeway connects Cana Island to the mainland.
You can either walk across the causeway or take the Door County Maritime Museum’s tractor-drawn wagon ride to the island.
So, are you ready to plan your visit to one of Wisconsin's most breathtaking beacons?
When operating under normal business hours, the Cana Island Lighthouse is open daily May 1st – October 31st, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. For more information, call (920) 743-5958. You can also visit the Door County Maritime Museum website or the Cana Island Lighthouse Facebook page.
