Unique remnants of bygone days can be found scattered throughout the state of West Virginia: general stores. Some of these, which have become iconic West Virginia favorites, hearken back over a hundred years to the late 1800s, including one gem tucked away in the beautiful mountains of Hardy County that was built in 1898 - and which you can still visit. Welcome to the Lost River General Store!
Well over a century ago, a general store opened up to serve the community of Lost River, West Virginia. It stocked a little bit of everything on its shelves — coffee, whiskey, leather, kerosene, kitchen supplies, and more.
There was even a post office!
Remarkably, that two-story, wood-framed West Virginia general store has stood the test of time. Operated now as Lost River General Store and Cafe (instead of the original Lost River Store House), this historic building is still going strong.
To visit Lost River General Store is to step back in time as it's one of the oldest general stores in West Virginia. You can even peek inside the old outhouse. (Wait until you see the inside! It's no traditional outhouse anymore!)
As you enter, you'll find many modern updates, from types of products sold (locally-made arts and crafts, antiques, jewelry, and more)...
... to types of food served from the thoroughly modern cafe kitchen.
Try the cafe's gourmet drinks, specialty baked goods, sandwiches, barbecue, or hand-dipped ice cream!
The store and cafe are open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
You can also stay next door from the store at The Inn at Lost River, a peaceful and cozy bed and breakfast. That's another experience you don't want to miss!
To learn more, visit the Lost River General Store on The Inn at Lost River's website. You can also The Inn at Lost River on Facebook. And if you love historic old stores, be sure to check out Alderson's Store, Harper's Old Country Store, O'Hurley's General Store ... the list goes on and on!
