The Picturesque Assateague Lighthouse In Virginia Is Rumored To Be Haunted
Assateague Lighthouse in Virginia is known for its unique history and paranormal activity.
Lighthouses are truly fascinating. Not only are they purposeful structures that have guided ships for centuries, but they also evoke a sense of protection and nostalgia. Virginia is blessed with many lighthouses, each of them with a unique story to tell. Today, we'll cover the unique history of the Assateague Lighthouse, whose history is marked by intrigue as well as paranormal activity. Here's more on this iconic Virginia landmark you'll be curious -- and perhaps a little apprehensive -- to learn more about.
The Assateague Lighthouse and surrounding island have long been associated with visions of wild horses, the beach, and the natural beauty of Virginia's barrier island.
Many who visit the island today make a point of seeing the namesake lighthouse, which stands at an impressive 142 feet tall.
In fact, it's even possible to climb to the top of the lighthouse and admire the panoramic view of the island and Chesapeake Bay.
However, the lighthouse that exists today was not the first on the island. The original Assateague Lighthouse, built in 1833, stood only 45 feet tall and was home to a lighthouse keeper by the name of David Watson.
Mr. Watson lived alone and faithfully monitored the lighthouse for seven years. Tragically, he died in the lighthouse, for reasons still unknown today.
Many believe that the ghost of Mr. Watson continues to monitor even the new lighthouse. Despite the door being securely locked each evening, it's not unusual to find the door mysteriously unlocked in the morning. It's as though someone -- or something -- has been frequenting the lighthouse.
Whether or not you believe the history of the lighthouse to be shrouded in paranormal activity, there's no denying its impressive history.
