With its eerie streets, abandoned places, and extensive history, it's commonly known that Virginia is one of the more haunted states out there. And that's especially true in the small town known as Stevensburg. Located in Culpeper County, this haunted town in Virginia is a noted place for paranormal activity. Most all of its haunted allegations revolve around Salubria, a manor built in the late 1700s. Here’s more on the fascinating — and chilling — history of this haunted town in Virginia.
Located in Northern Virginia, the tiny town of Stephensburg sits at the intersection of Route 663 and Route 3.
At first glance, Stevensburg in Virginia is an unsuspecting spot for paranormal activity. For one, the rural community is home to one of the smallest post offices in America.
Measuring at just ten by fifteen feet, the Stephensburg Post Office is tiny.
The town was originally called York by the Europeans who settled there in the eighteenth century.
The town was eventually named for General Edward Stevens, a hero of the Revolutionary War. During that time, campers would wander through town, often camping in ravines. And during the Civil War, Stevensburg served as the site of the Union Encampment of 1863.
Despite a significant history involving two wars and slavery, most of the town’s paranormal activity occurs inside the well-preserved mansion known as Salubria.
Salubria was built in 1742 and is the oldest brick building in Culpeper County. This Georgian manor house can be accessed just half a mile southeast of Stevensburg. It's also considered to be one of the more paranormal spots in all of Virginia. Serious ghost hunters and investigators have reported bone-chilling incidents that cast the town in an eerie shadow.
Virginia Ghosts, a book written by Marguerite du Pont Lee, recounts a particularly haunted encounter that took place here.
Decades ago, two young boys who lived at Salubria were asked to get more sugar from the barrel upstairs. In the dim light, they walked upstairs and were shocked to make out the dim figure of a woman with jet black hair, dressed in white with outstretched arms.
Many believe the spirit belongs to Lady Spotswood, one of the home's first residents.
Interestingly enough, there are two graveyards on the property of the house and yet the grave belonging to Lady Spotswood remains missing.
Whether or not you believe in the tales of Salubria Manor, it's no stretch of the imagination to say that this small community has a fascinating history.
