The Breathtaking Skyline Drive Will Show You Virginia Like Never Before
One of America's most scenic byways is located right in Virginia. Aptly named, Skyline Drive promises drivers the feeling of soaring through the sky while enjoying some of the most breathtaking mountainous landscapes in the East Coast. It's an iconic drive and as summer quickly approaches, there's no better time to embark on a good ol' fashioned road trip. Here's just a glimpse on what you can expect from this historic 105-mile drive:
Skyline Drive is a scenic byway that meanders through Shenandoah National Park, starting in Rockfish Gap and ending in Front Royal.
For gorgeous mountain views and sweeping landscapes, there's no better drive in all of Virginia.
The road winds its way along the spine of the Blue Ridge Mountains, providing ample places to pull off and take in the view.
At each designated overlook, you can check the elevation.
The highest point in all of Skyline Drive is Hawksbill Mountain, situated at an impressive 4,050 feet.
On a clear day, Skyline Drive takes about three hours to complete. But you may want to factor in time to hike a few trails along the way.
Dark Hollow Falls is one of the more popular hikes along the way. It's 1.5 miles out-and-back and leads to this gorgeous waterfall.
The hike can be accessed near milepost 50.7 along Skyline Drive.
Beautiful in all seasons, Shenandoah National Park is especially breathtaking in the summer. Roll down your windows and you can scout out some gorgeous wildlife and blooms!
So pack a picnic, bring some friends and family, and prepare to be entranced by the natural beauty of this iconic drive.
If you stay out 'til sunset, you'll see the mountains in all of their blue and purple glory.
