Really, we can't think of many reasons why you'd want to visit Roanoke, Virginia, because we sure would like to keep this hidden gem a secret for a little bit longer.

12. Great Salt Plains State Park: Crystal Digging and Wide-Open Skies

  • Why Visit in April: A unique activity you can enjoy when visiting the Great Salt Plains State Park in April is hunting for selenite crystals in the salt plains. These rare hourglass-shaped crystals are found only here in Oklahoma, at this one spot. Digging season starts in April and lasts until October.
