When it comes to the best hikes in Texas, there's no shortage of amazing trails to choose from. One of my personal favorites is the El Capitan Trail, nestled way out in Guadalupe Mountains National Park. It's rugged, remote, and definitely challenging, making it perfect for those times when you want to really work up a sweat and immerse yourself in the great outdoors.
If you're up for a challenge, the El Capitan Trail in Guadalupe Mountains National Park delivers - and then some. At just over 11 miles out and back, this moderately-difficult hike showcases the towering peak after which the trail is named.
Beginning at the Pine Springs trailhead, the El Capitan Trail leads to the base of the iconic mountain and boasts incredible views along the way. It is a rather rocky path, so make sure you have the appropriate footwear.
With an elevation gain of over 1,600 feet, hikers should expect a good amount of uphill climbing. However, once you reach the top and gaze out at the sprawling valley below, you'll be thankful you made the trek.
Native plants abound all along the trail, and you'll be surprised to see such colorful blooms in the desert. Just watch out for cacti!
All of the trails in Guadalupe Mountains National Park are extremely well-marked, and El Capitan is no exception. It also interconnects with several other trails, so feel free to branch off and create your own unique adventure.
El Capitan itself stretches high up towards the clouds, standing at an impressive height of 8,065 feet. That's almost as tall as nearby Guadalupe Peak, which is the highest point in Texas at 8,718 feet.
So if you're looking to travel off the beaten path and discover a rugged, remote hike with breathtaking scenery, the El Capitan Trail is for you. You'll definitely work up a sweat, but you'll also feel a deep sense of inner peace thanks to time spend immersed in nature.
