Tucked away in Gary, Indiana is a magnificent cathedral that is slowly crumbling to the ground. Looking more like something from a fairy tale than the midwest, City Methodist Church is a stunning modern ruin. It was built to elevate the people of a hard-working mill town to divine heights, and still serves to inspire awe in all who see it.

This iconic church was built in 1925 in a striking Gothic style.

It was carved out of Bedford limestone.

In its golden years, the City Methodist Church would serve over 3,000 worshipers on a Sunday.

Unfortunately, the church was doomed to a relatively short lifespan.

The soaring arches and spires of the Gothic architecture proved extremely expensive to maintain.

As families began moving out of Gary and towards more urban areas, the church struggled to fill its pews.

The church finally closed in 1975. Rather than sell the property, the church simply shut its doors.

It has been standing empty ever since, and has become a popular destination for urban explorers, indie movie shoots, and photographers.

The interior of the church is light-filled and airy during the day. Forty years of decay has done little to dull its beauty.
