The Red Poppy Festival in Georgetown, Texas, is a vibrant spring event featuring poppy blooms, live music, food vendors, and family-friendly activities.
Spring is one of our favorite times of year. The earth comes back alive after a long winter’s rest, and eye-popping blooms burst forth from the soil. One of the best places to see such beautiful blossoms is the Red Poppy Festival in Georgetown, Texas. Perhaps the best spring festival in Texas, this annual event takes place every April. Visitors enjoy a full weekend of activities, including food vendors, an artisan market, live music, and more. Of course, the poppy plantings scattered all throughout downtown are also not to be missed! Gather the entire family, and let’s have a blast at this poppy festival in Texas.
Certified by the Texas Legislature as the official "Red Poppy Capital of Texas," Georgetown erupts in a sea of color when springtime rolls around.
Poppies have been a symbol of Georgetown for over 100 years. Right after World War I, Henry Purl Compton, a soldier in the American Expeditionary Forces, sent seeds from poppies in Europe to his mother, who lived in Georgetown.
The poppies reseed themselves year after year, and the town celebrates their annual bloom with the Red Poppy Festival, which is held each year in April.
This year, the Red Poppy Festival will take place from Friday, April 26 through Sunday, April 28, and it promises to be an incredible time for all ages.
Festivities kick off at 7 p.m. on Friday evening with live music, an open-air artisan market, and delicious food vendors.
On Saturday, the schedule is jam-packed with a parade, classic car show, various song, dance, and theatre performances on all three stages, and a special area just for kids.
Sunday brings more performances, a BMX stunt show, and even a pet parade! Show off your pooch, then take their picture in one of the many poppy fields scattered throughout downtown.
The food court will be open all weekend (from open to close each day), so you can refuel with gourmet burgers, ice cold lemonade, decadent funnel cakes, and virtually anything else you're craving.
Festival admission is free for everyone - even the concerts! We can't think of a better way to enjoy the spring!
Of course, marveling at the beautiful poppies is one of the main highlights of the festival. Check out the Georgetown Convention & Visitors Bureau website linked below for a detailed map of the best poppy fields in the city.
