Every True Austinite Has Had These 10 Bizarre Experiences At Least Once

We don't say "keep Austin weird" for nothing. If you spend enough time in Austin, you'll start to experience some odd occurrences on a daily basis. These 10 bizarre experiences have happened to every true Austinite at least once.

1. Walked alongside a marching band

The HONK! festival blares its brassy, vibrant melodies all across the city every April. It's not uncommon to hear roaring fanfares from miles away.

2. Eaten alcoholic ice cream

Amy's Ice Creams is known for producing wacky and wild flavors, and nothing beats those of the alcoholic variety. The flavors rotate daily, but some favorites include tequila sunrise and Shiner Bock.

3. Had an original poem written about you

Venture down SoCo or West 2nd, and you're sure to see street vendors of all varieties. Nothing beats the spontaneous creativity from the typewriter poets, though. These quirky word paintings will stay with you forever.

4. Driven on Texas' shortest highway... at 10 mph

Texas State Highway 165 cuts through the Texas State Cemetery and is the only highway that is partially locked at night. It's only .51 miles long, but you still need to obey the speed limit. If you go over 10mph, you could get a ticket!

5. Gone to a bar on 6th street just for the A/C

When the temperatures climb into the triple digits, the last thing you want to do is stomp around in the heat. Sometimes that frosty A/C blasting from the dive bar is too good to pass up.

6. Had a race with a pedicab... and lost

Just because you're running on diesel fuel doesn't mean you can outsmart those pedicab drivers. They can dexterously weave their way though traffic faster than any four-door sedan ever could.

7. Noticed the striking similarity between the city hall building and an armadillo

Nope, you're not the only one who's noticed it. The Austin City Hall building really does look like an armadillo from above. Ever stood under that awning along West 2nd? That's the tail.

8. Encountered the Lizardman or any other equally quirky Austinite

Erik 'The Lizardman' isn't the only person showing off his personal style. Chances are, you've seen a few scantily-clad unicyclists throughout the city, too.

9. Done an exuberant happy dance over a particularly awesome parking spot

Finding a perfect parking spot in front of your favorite venue almost sounds too good to be true. When that beautiful space finally arrives, it's impossible not to celebrate.

10. Audibly chucked from a piece of street art

Willie for president doesn't sound like that bad of an idea, especially if Waylon could be his VP.
