There's something wildly fascinating about a cemetery. It's a place that's rife with the past, fairly bleeding with stories that will never be told. Tennessee is nothing if not steeped in history, and the many cemeteries that speckle the whole of the state are chock full of that wicked fascination we all harbor. Take a look at some fantastic spots that we trekked out and found for you.
12) Franklin City Cemetery - Franklin
You'l find this cemetery on the national historic registry, and you'll also find four veterans of the American Revolutionary War buried here. It's not all Civil War in the south, friends. Tennessee has been affecting the country for decades.
11) Knoxville National Cemetery - Knoxville
There are almost 10,000 people buried here, in a cemetery first established in 1863. It has been a part of the national historic registry since 1996, and boasts the Union Soldier Monument.
10) Shiloh National Military Park - Savannah
Remembering the Battle of Shiloh, this Civil War battlefield and cemetery is sure to get those brain cells workin' overtime.
9) Fraterville Miners' Circle - Lake City
Located in Leach Cemetery (there ya go, fact sticklers), the circle commemorates those lost in the mining tragedy of 1902.
8) Andrew Johnson National Cemetery - Greeneville
Yes, Andrew and Eliza Johnson are buried here, at the former president's request - shocker, hey? We'd say that should be enough reason to give the grounds a solid visit, don't you?
7) Chattanooga National Cemetery - Chattanooga
The cemetery was born in 1863, to hold Union soldiers that were lost in the Civil War. It now holds more than 50,000 grave sites.
6) Greenwood Cemetery - Chattanooga
Known as one of the more beautiful cemeteries in the area, you may want to spend an afternoon wandering, reading gravestones and paying tribute to the dead.
5) McGavock Confederate Cemetery - Franklin
This historic cemetery is the largest Confederate gravesite in the south, with a story to boot. Stop by for a tour of the Carnton Plantation and and the FULL story behind this beautiful, eerie and historically charged spot.
4) Mt. Olivet Cemetery - Nashville
250 acres in the heart of Music City? We bet you didn't even know it was there.
3) New Park Cemetery - Memphis
This is one of the eeriest places we visited...there's just something wildly interesting about a spot that's so beautiful, quiet...and dead.
2) Riverside Cemetery - Jackson
This historic ten-acre cemetery is one that'll get your camera working, and your mind positively whirring. It's interesting to think of all the lives that were once lived, suddenly relinquished to a spot of land and stone.
1) Woodlawn Baptist Church and Cemetery - Nutbush
1966 saw this cemetery added to the National Registrar of Historic Places, and once you make it out? You'll know exactly why. Also, Woodlawn Baptist Church was the home church to a young Tina Turner. Small world, hey?
